Blood was taken from 28 sheep with babesia spp and 27 healthy sheep. Serum haptoglobin and total, lipid bound and protein bound sialic acid were determined by ELISA or Katopolis based kits. Mean serum haptoglobin total, lipid bound and protein bound sialic acid were higher in infected sheep compared with healthy ones (p<0.05). However, there were no significant correlations between total, lipid bound or protein bound sialic acid and haptoglobin in infected sheep except for lipid bound sialic acid with haptoglobin (P <0.05). Results suggest that serum sialic acid and haptoglobin were higher in sheep with babesia spp compared with healthy controls.
