Report highlights leading food safety barriers to US agricultural trade

A new report from the US Trade Representative (USTR) has identified the top Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) barriers that blocked US food and agricultural exports in 2012, with biotechnology and pathogen reduction treatments for beef and poultry among the problems for exporters to the EU. The report, 2013 Report on Sanitary and Phy-tosanitary Measures, outlines the SPS measures that USTR characterises as unscientific and/or discriminatory, along with a country-by-country breakdown of the top trade issues. Ambassador Demetrios Marantis, the acting US trade representative, said in a forward to the report that the USTR had negotiated some successes last year.
