UK farming income rebounds due to improved crop values

Total income from UK farming increased by nearly a third last year to its highest level since the mid-nineties, despite the rising costs of farm inputs. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), reports that total farming incomeis provisionally estimated to have increased to 5.693 billion (7bn) in 2011 up by 1.352bn (31%) compared with 4.567bn in 2010. In real terms, after adjustment for inflation, the total figure is estimated to have risen by 1.126bn(25%). Farm subsidies, primarily Single Payments and agri-environment scheme payments, accounted for 3.4bn of the overall income figure.
