Highlights?Ablation experiments are conducted by using a pulsed picosecond laser.?Effects of original surface roughness of Cr12MoV mold steel are studied at 532?nm.?Effects of laser wavelength on ablation of 9Cr18 stainless steel are analyzed.?Effects of chemical composition on ablation of Cr12MoV, 9Cr18 and H13A are investigated at 1064?nm.?Mechanisms of heat accumulation and plasma shielding are discussed.AbstractDue to excellent properties, Cr12MoV mold steel, 9Cr18 stainless steel and H13A cemented carbide are widely used in industry.
