While Western governments tried to resolve the issues of international sanctions against Iran for the country's uranium enrichment program, non-nuclear weapons and violence were threatening oil production in Iraq and nearby countries in the Middle East. Violent protests at Baker Hughes and Gazprom sites in Iraq caused both companies to halt operations throughout the country. A Muslim group stormed Schlumberger's camp in Rumaila North Field, forcing the company to suspend operations.
