Prof. Arthur Norman Exton-Smith, CBE, MA, MD, FRCP (1920—90), was an outstanding clinical geriatrician and ger-ontologist. He promoted modern medical management of the chronic sick, extended knowledge of medicine in old age and was internationally recognised for his gerontologic-al research. He was a shrewd diplomat within the Royal College of Physicians, the British Geriatrics Society and the Health Ministries. He was educated at Nottingham High School; Pembroke College, Cambridge; University College Hospital London (UCH); qualified in 1943; joined the RAMC and landed on the Normandy beaches on D-Day +1. In 1947 he was appointed registrar to Professor Sir Max Rosenheim and later to Lord Amulree. He obtained his MD and was appointed consultant geriatrician at the Whittington Hospital all in 1951. He was elected FRCP in 1964, succeeded Amulree as consultant at UCH/St Pancras Hospital in 1965 and became the first Barlow Professor of Geriatric Medicine at UCH in 1973. In 1981 he was appointed CBE, and in 1984 was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Medicine by the University of Nottingham.
