The invention of a commercially viable tubeless tire by Frank Herzegh of B.F. Goodrich during the 1940s was a breakthrough in tire air retention technology that eliminated the need for separate manufacture of tire inner tubes (ref. 1). The initial butyl rubber based tubeless inner liner proposed by Herzegh was later replaced by bromobutyl or chlorobutyl due to their better adhesion to the tire carcass (ref. 2).
