Since 2014, the basic version of the Smart Fortwo has sported a lightweight roof from the automotive supplier Fehrer Automotive GmbH of Kitzin-gen, Germany, a member of the Aunde Group. In 2017, the sandwich-design roof module consisting of a polyurethane (PU), glass fiber, and paper honeycomb won the SPE Award in the category "Lightweight Innovation". The outer skin of the sandwich construction is back compression molded directly in a single processing step and can be produced in two different versions.
