METI reports that Japanese production of lithium ion batteries rose by 10% year-on-year to 751M units in January to July 2017, while capacity increased by 18% to 2,564MAh. Growth was driven by automotive batteries, output of which rose by 42% year-on-year to 460M units over the same period. The sharp rise in demand for cobalt has resulted in concerns over supply shortages in future.
