I gained a scholarship from Manchester Grammar School to Brasenose College, Oxford, starting my medical studies there in 1949 and qualifying in December 1955. After a surgical house job at Middlesex Hospital I had moved to Central Middlesex Hospital to work as houseman to Dr Richard Asher. I then took up a senior house officer post in geriatric medicine at Central Middlesex as a convenient base to work for MRCP.
