Moctezumite Moctezuma Mine (La Bambolla Mine) Moctezuma Municipality of Moctezuma State of Sonora, Mexico

Moctezumite was named "in allusion to the [presumed] name of the mine, La Moctezuma, and the nearest town" 12 miles to the north, Moctezuma, Moctezuma Municipality, Sonora State, Mexico (fig. 2), by Richard Gaines (1965a, p. 1163). Moctezumite is a bright to dark orange lead-uranium tellurite with the formula Pb(UO2)(TeO3)2 The mineral crystallizes in the monoclinic system and has a hardness of 3 and a specific gravity of 5.73. Swihart et al. (1993) determined the crystal structure of this exceedingly rare mineral. Known crystal sizes are all less than 5 mm.
