Title 'AIDS: Awareness In Females of Post-graduate students of Artfaculty'

AIDS has become the most dreaded disease all over the world including India. After first report from Madras in 1986, cases were reported from other parts of India also. Now it is widely prevalent and new cases are being added day by day. Since there in no curative medicine or vaccine against it, awareness and suitable measures can only prevent it. A study was conducted to find out the knowledge and awareness of HIV/AiDS among post graduate students of Art-faculty of a college of metropolitan city. Their age was between 21-26 year. It was found that 9% of students were not knowing that, it is a disease. About 50% were not knowing cause of the disease; germs, bacteria, arthropods even hereditary were blamed. Mother to child transmission was reported by 38.6% girls only. Medium of transmission and high risk groups were not clear to them. Only 43.9% could tell that HIV/AIDS is not curable. Preventive measures such as use of condom & sterilized syringes were known to 54.4% only. Hence a great need for health education about RTI/STI was felt to prevent HIV/AIDS spread.
