Evaluation of Fungicides on Corm Rot Pathogens of Saffron

An in vitro effect of commonly available fungicides (Carbendazim 50% WP, Sulphur 80% WP, Triadimefen 25% WP, Zineb 75% WP, Captan 50% WP, Bitertanol 25% WP and Dithianon 75% WP) in Kashmir valley on the growth of soil borne pathogens (sterile Basidiomycetes fungus, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. gladioli, Phytophthora sp. and Rhizoctonia solani) of saffron were investigated to determine the effectiveness of the fungicides in reducing the growth of these pathogenic fungi. Each fungicide was assayed with each fungus at 0, 10, 100, 1000 and 10,000 ppm in Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) and incubated at 27~+ -1 deg c for five days and each treatment was replicated four times. The results revealed that radial growth of these fungi were significantly reduced that Carbendazim 50% WP was of great promise against Phytopthora sp., Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. gladioli, Rhizoctonia solani and sterile Basidiomycetes fungus followed by Triadimefen 25% WP, Bitertanol 25% WP, Dithianon 75% WP, and Zineb 75% WP towards inhibition of the fungus growth, while the Sulphur improve the radial growth of sterile Basidiomycetes fungus at all concentrations and Phytophthora sp. 10 ppm and 100 ppm by Captan 50% WP and Sulphur 80% WP. The aim of this research is to investigate least amount of concentration of fungicides effectiveness against corm rot pathogens of saffron.
