In the man-made Lake Ayame (Cote d'Ivoire), a 180-day cage culture feeding trial was conducted during February-August 2002 to investigate the effects of 3 agricultural byproducts (chicken droppings, wheat bran and maize bran) on the survival rate (SR), mean daily weight gain (MDWG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) of a landlocked population of juvenile Sarotherodon melanotheron. The results were compared to those obtained from fishes fed on a local commercial diet and a group of unfed fishes. Results revealed that the SRs of groups fed on byproducts were significantly lower (chicken droppings, 69.0+or-1.4%; maize bran, 59.0+or-7.1%; wheat bran, 56.0+or-5.7%) than those fed on commercial diet (95.0+or-4.2%). The lowest SR was noted in the unfed group (53%). The highest MDWG was observed in fish fed on commercial diet (0.26 g/day), followed by those fed on maize bran (0.09+or-0.01 g/day), wheat bran (0.08+or-0.02 g/day) and chicken droppings (0.05 g/day); the unfed fish had the lowest MDWG (0.02 g/day). FCR was highest in fish fed on chicken droppings (9.59+or-0.71), followed by those fed on maize bran (7.85+or-0.60), wheat bran (7.61+or-0.64) and commercial diet (4.27+or-0.47). MDWG was significantly positively correlated with dietary dry matter (beta: 0.98), lipid (beta: 0.99), protein (beta: 0.85) and energy (beta: 0.98) levels, with lipid affecting the MDWG of S. melanotheron the most. It is concluded that maize bran is a more suitable feed for S. melanotheron than either chicken droppings or wheat bran..
