Tosin Adebowale sits on a yellow chair outside a bungalow on Ibasa Island in Nigeria's largest city of Lagos, where she recycles waste. She crosses her legs as she fans herself with a hand-held fan, which is also made of recycled waste. On the island, seashells, slippers, soft drinks bottles and plastic covers are laying around everywhere. It is these items that Adebowale uses to decorate the passage to the bungalow. At her training centre in a separate building, four married women are seated, each with a sewing machine."The first thing we teach here is how to sew and this is what they are doing,"says Adebowale. She brings out a cooking bag made of Styrofoam, requesting one of the women to get her the bag cover, which is also made of Styrofoam.Styrofoam is a brand name for expanded polystyrene. The material usually comes in a variety of forms, shapes and sizes, but is typically found as protective packaging for furniture and electronics during shipping.
