Let's Celebrate

To celebrate achievements in the radiologic sciences and the people who made it possible, Radiologic Technology is showcasing a different pioneer on each cover of its 91st volume year. On the cover of this issue, accomplished artist Alvin Mark Tan used oil on canvas in a post-impressionistic style to bring to life Genevieve Eilert Eilert served as executive secretary for the American Society of X-Ray Technicians, now called the American Society of Radiologic Technologists, and in 1946, became the Society's first full-time employee. She handled membership, records, annual meeting files, and general correspondence and served as associate editor of the journal. The bold strokes of color that surround her mirror the determination and strength found in her steady and deliberate gaze. She was an anchor, a steady presence during the early years of the Society. In the coming year, the journal will display similarly styled portraits of Wilhelm Roentgen, who discovered x-rays in 1895 while experimenting with cathode rays, and took the first radiograph—or roentgenogram; Royce Osborn, the first African American president of the ASRT, who was known for his innovation, his determination, and his humor; Jean Inglis Widger, longtime editor of The X-Ray Technician (later renamed Radiologic Technology); Dr Ed C Jerman, a scientist, inventor, educator, and physician who was instrumental in advancing the radiologic science profession and, in 1920, founding the 14-member professional society that would later become ASRT; and finally Sister M Beatrice Merrigan, the first person to take and pass the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists certification exam.
