Providing Patient Education on Radiation Exposure

Many people have a negative view of ionizing radiation used in medical imaging studies and cancer treatments. This often stems from misunderstanding the amount of radiation associated with various procedures. Often, people are unaware of the radiation they are exposed to naturally in their lives, from consumer products to ultraviolet sun exposure. Radiologic technologists have a responsibility to provide accurate information about imaging procedures, potential risks and medical benefits, and methods to reduce radiation exposure during examinations, which can alleviate patient anxiety.
