Managers' Perspectives on Generational Differences in Medica Imaging Departments

Purpose To examine generational differences in medica! imaging departments by assessing radiology managers' point, of view on the unique traits of each generation, areas of potential intergenerational conflict, and strategies to promote a unified workplace. Methods A cross-sectional survey research method was designed to collect and analyze data regarding managers' perspectives on generational differences in medical imaging departments. Seventy-seven completed surveys were analyzed for this pilot study. Results Data revealed 4 distinct generational cohorts—veterans, baby boomers, generation X, and millennials—are working side by side in medical imaging departments, ahd generational differences that affect the workplace do exist from the managers'perspectives. Discussion Radiology managers in this pilot study identified technology and communication issues as areas of intergenerational conflict among radiologic technologists. Managers acknowledged the importance of communicating in multiple ways, using group decision-making skills, and implementing mentoring programs to resolve intergenerational conflict and to promote a unified department. Managers in this pilot study also believed generational differences resulted in technologists of diverse ages learning from one another and working effectively together. Conclusion The results of this pilot study provide a foundation for future research to examine generational differences among radiologic technologists, A large-scale study with more radiology manager participants is needed to generalize findings to all medical imaging departments.
