Purpose To determine risk factors and preventive techniques for work-related musculoskeletai disorders among diagnostic medical sonographers in the United States. Methods A search was performed using CINAHL, MEDUNE, and PubMed databases to identify articles discussing risk factors of musculoskeletal disorders and preventive ergonomic techniques for diagnostic medical sonographers. Results Twenty-two articles resulted from the search. Articles were included if they discussed ergonomic techniques and risk of injury. Articles were excluded if they did not pertain to sonography. The articles demonstrated that causes for these injuries are multifactorial. Various solutions that can be adapted to an individual sonographer are needed. Discussion The incidence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders among diagnostic medical sonographers in the United States is 90%. Sonographers reduce the likelihood of developing a disorder by understanding body mechanics and risk factors, such as age, patient obesity, increased patient volume, underreporting injuries, and psychosocial factors. They also can employ preventive measures such as stretching, exercising, increasing optima! physical and mental health by regularly using ergonomic techniques and equipment, taking regular breaks, and implementing different approaches (eg, ambidextrous scanning and the Alexander technique). Conclusion There are multiple causes and risk factors for these injuries, and there are multiple approaches to their prevention. Sonographers, educators, and administration must accept their role and be proactive when implementing change.
