Treating Lymphoma: An Overview

Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma are cancers that begin in the lymphatic system. Thomas Hodgkin is credited for discovering that approximately 90% of lymphoma cases spread in a predictable and contiguous manner from 1 lymph node group to the next. Hodgkin lymphoma represents 0.5% of new cancer cases, whereas non-Hodgkin lymphoma accounts for 4.3% of new cancer cases. From 2009 to 2015, the 5-year survival rate for patients with Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma was 86.6% and 72%, respectively. In 2016, 3 cases of Hodgkin lymphoma were reported for every 100 000 people and 18 cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma were reported for every 100 000 people, with non-Hodgkin lymphoma having a higher instance of death.
