Hurricane Florence continues its advance on the US East Coast bringing with it a possible 13-foot storm surge as officials eye a possible new storm in the Gulf of Mexico.

The National Weather Service early Wednesday said more than 5.4 million live in areas under hurricane warnings while another 4 million are in areas under a tropical storm watch from Florida to Maine due to Florence. In the Gulf of Mexico, offshore E&P operators off the Texas and Louisiana coasts are watching the development of what could be the next named system. A trough of low pressure over the south-central Gulf of Mexico is becoming less organized, but the NHC still gives the disturbance a 60% chance of becoming a tropical system over the next five days as it moves over the Yucatan Peninsula and into the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. From there, most forecast models have the system making landfall on the Texas coast south of Corpus Christi.
