At a meeting of investors and analysts at the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), a new plan was unveiled that would have gas suppliers measure and disclose methane emissions to investor-owned utilities starting in 2020.

The effort is called the Natural Gas Sustainability Initiative (NGSI) and it was previewed Monday at the annual economic conference, held in Orlando, Florida. It is a joint venture between the EEI and the American Gas Association. Energy industry officials said they see NGSI as critical in its campaign to ensure continued acceptance of natural gas as a long-term bridge fuel to a future where alternative energy sources are more widely used.
