Eutrochium maculatum Spotted Joe-Pye weed

Joe-Pye weeds are tall, un-branched perennials with whorls of four or five yellowish-green leaves up to 8 inches long with serrated margins and conspicuous veins. The flat-topped, 4- to 5-inch clusters of feathery rose-purple to mauve flower heads appear on top of purple or purplish stems mid- to late summer into fall. The flowers are often fragrant. Seed heads are ornamental in winter. Until recently, Joe-Pye weeds were in the same genus as the bonesets, Eupatorium.
