Bed lines play an important role in landscape design—they're what the eye sees first when viewing a site. The bed line ideally should shape the whole lawn area, with planting beds placed beyond it. Bed lines are most often curvilinear, but straight lines can also be attractive, particularly when accenting a modern or prairie-style home. If choosing curves, aim for wide, sweeping arcs, and avoid short in-and-out squiggles. If you have the luxury of laying out an entire landscape, do as landscape architects often do, and begin with the larger bedding line. Do your best to encompass any trees or accessory buildings outside the line. This not only makes for easier maintenance, but it helps create flow and unity.
