US Gulf coast ethane prices rose to their equal highest this year in late August on higher natural gas prices and growing petrochemical sector demand, but slumped in the following days as Hurricane Laura swept into the area. Mont Belvieu EPC ethane prices started rising in late June alongside frming natural gas prices supported by cooling demand and strengthening demand from ethylene crackers as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic increasing the need for single-use plastics used in consumable goods. Prices then fell sharply back as the storm approached, leading to multiple shutdowns at petrochemical plants issuing force majeure ahead of Laura’s landfall on 27 August.
