Have you read the national correct coding initiative policy manual for medicare services?

While teaching at a recent Wound Clinic Business seminar, I was asked many questions about (1) Medicare payment for different pairs of procedures performed on the same day and (2) about the maximum number of the same service/procedure that could be billed during the same encounter. The attendees were angry that the industry sales representatives did not seem to have those answers for them or provided them with different answers. I was surprised to hear that wound care providers were asking industry sales representatives those type of reimbursement questions. Wound care sales representatives are very valuable resources for product information, published clinical evidence, clinical educations, and so on. They are not trained reimbursement specialists. Therefore, wound care providers should use their reimbursement reference materials, consult with their coders and billers, and/or contact the manufacturers' reimbursement hotlines for answers to their reimbursement questions.
