The common cold is one of the most prevalent diseases globally and is typically caused by rhinovirus infection. However, the ingestion of probiotics appears to have modest effects on the incidence of viral respiratory infection. The mechanism of theseeffects is not clear, but there is evidence from animal models that probiotics may have an effect on innate immune responses to pathogens. DuPont Nutrition & Health (DuPont) sponsored a new study, carried out at the University of Virginia, to determinethe effect of administration of Bifidobacterium animalis subspecies lactis BI-04 (commercially available as HOWARU Protect Adult) on innate and adaptive host responses to experimental rhinovirus challenge.
