摘要

Academic journals are faced with the dilemma between publishing exciting research and the lack of transparency in reporting many aspects of headline-grabbing studies, the findings of which, on many occasions, cannot be replicated. Some journals have taken the matter to heart and others have brushed it aside. However, evidence continues to mount that non-transparent research practices can erode the trustworthiness of reported results. In this context, a recent Editorial in The Lancet Neurology called for novel performance metrics for academic achievement. On Feb 10, 2020, the Center for Open Science introduced a formal measure for evaluating journal policies in promoting transparency and reproducibility. The measure, called the Transparency and Openness Promotion (TOP) factor, rates journal policies on data citation and transparency, analytical code transparency, materials transparency, reporting guidelines, pre-registration of studies and analyses, replication, publication bias, and open science badges, and is based on the TOP Guidelines.
