What Does the Future Hold for Nurses?

Recently, I had a conversation with a friend whose child is considering a nursing career, specifically in maternal-newborn nursing. My friend was very gloomy about the future of nursing, especially in this specialty. She noted that new birth data had been released for the decade from 2007 to 2017 and that the data indicated that the number of births have declined each year, with the exception of a small increase in 2014 (Martin, Hamilton, Osterman, Driscoll, & Drake, 2018). In addition, my friend knew of several maternity units that were closing. There were so many local nurses looking for positions that she was concerned for her child choosing a "healthy" profession.
