Improvement of Periulcer Skin Condition in Venous Leg Ulcer Patients: Prospective, Randomized, Controlled, Single-blinded Clinical Trial Comparing a Biosynthetic Cellulose Dressing with a Foam Dressing

Chronic venous insufficiency may lead to the development of venous leg ulcers. An allergic reaction of the periulcer skin may extend the therapeutic time to an average of 1 to 2 weeks and inhibits epithelialization of the ulcer. Venous stasis may lead to allergic reactions and skin irritation and often present as dry skin. Epidermis that lacks moisture or sebum is characterized by. a pattern of scaling and itching. Many patients with a venous leg ulcer report a significant reduction of their quality of life. Compression is the standard treatment for venous ulcers and is directed at lowering venous hypertension, decreasing venous stasis and inflammation, and further enhancing tissue vascularization. The dressing evaluated in this study is a biosynthetic cellulose wound dressing (BWD), which has the ability to both donate and absorb moisture. The dressing is reported to improve periwound skin condition, leading to more expeditious healing than standard care, such as with a foam dressing.
