NRC Endorses ANS Nuclear Criticality Safety Standards

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued Rev. 3 to Regulatory Guide (RG) 3.71, "Nuclear Criticality Safety Standards for Nuclear Materials Outside Reactor Cores" in October 2018. Rev. 3 of RG 3.71 describes procedures for preventing nuclear criticality accidents in operations that involve handling, processing, storing, or transporting special nuclear materials (or a combination of these activities). This RG provides updates based on changes to a number of American Nuclear Society (ANS) standards on nuclear criticality safety—the ANS-8 series of standards-and one standard developed by the International Organization of Standardization (ISO).
