Microscopic examination of fecal material has been the test of choice for the diagnosis of giardiasis in dogs and cats. Trophozoites may be detected via direct examination of saline-diluted feces under a microscope, with or without the aid of Lugol iodine staining. Zinc sulfate fecal flotation examination is recommended for detection of cysts in the feces. Because cyst shedding may be intermittent, examination of 3 different fecal samples obtained from alternate days can maximize diagnostic yield.
