Evidently frustrated by the slow pace of negotiations with China over the supply of an enhanced pressurized heavy water reactor (PHWR) at Atucha-3, Argentina's government has instructed its negotiators to complete a commercial deal by the end of the month, Nuclear Intelligence Weekly learned this week. This would set the stage for a second round of negotiations with the prospective supplier, China National Nuclear Corp. (CNNC), for a Hualong-One, possibly also at Atucha although the site has not been formally announced. There had been hopes that a deal for Atucha-3 would be finalized last fall, with a Hualong-One deal to follow by around March of this year, but talks got bogged down over price and repayment terms, NIW understands.
