Removal of nonmetallic inclusions in electroslag remelting

Already the first experiments with electroslag remelting have shown that the content of oxide nonmetallic inclusions in steel after remelting decreases [1]. Assuming that this is associated with the coalescence of nonmetallic inclusions, the authors of Ref. 2 carried out appropriate experiments which they analysed using the equations derived in 1946 by Frenkel' for viscous and non-viscous coalescing liquids. In Ref. 3 and 4 the authors obtained quantitative data on the degree of cleaning of the steel to remove nonmetallic inclusions in electroslag remelting, and in Ref. 5 a model was constructed of this process assuming that the inclusions are removed mainly in the flow of the film of melting metal from the electrode. The problems of coalescence of liquids have also been examined in chemical technology [6], with steelmelting processes being a partial case of chemical technology.
