Iran’s Mounting Pile of Enriched Uranium

When Joe Biden becomes US president on Jan. 20 he will face a more technically competent Iranian nuclear organization than existed when the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was agreed in 2015. And now, thanks to the current incum- bent’s decision to exit the deal, Iran has more than 12 times the amount of stockpiled enriched uranium than it did on Jan. 16, 2016, when the JCPOA was ofcially implemented. On that day the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) certifed that Iran had taken the steps outlined in the agreement to restrict its nuclear activities. Despite Iran’s subsequent decision to breach those restrictions, it continues to allow IAEA inspectors into its facilities and informs the agency of its plans in advance of carrying them out.
