Hungary is attempting to expedite pre-construction work at Paks 2 in an attempt to make up some of the lost time, and the governmen of Prime Minister Viktor Orban recently received a key approval from the EU in this regard. Political leaders in Budapest are claiming that the Covid-19 pandemic only shows how badly the country will need the two VVER-1200 reactors. However, renewed concerns about the project's costs and a phenomenal surge in solar power production this spring have many Hungarians wondering whether Paks 2 is far more trouble than it is worth.
