Diablo Canyon Cited for Violation Following Expedited Repairs

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has cited Pacifc Gas and Electric (PG&E) for failing to heed industry warnings about piping corrosion in emergency response cooling systems and take preventative measures that would have avoided similar corrosion discovered at Diablo Canyon-2 this summer. The dis- covery of corrosion predated the agency’s controversial decision to approve expedited emergency repairs on the corresponding emergency response system at Unit 1 while the unit was still operating (NIW Aug.28’20). And it wasn’t until after those Unit 1 repairs were completed that NRC inspectors realized that PG&E had failed to heed the industry warnings from over a dec- ade earlier.
