IAEA Cornel Feruta, the ‘Continuity Candidate’

In his campaign to become the next director general (DG) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Romanian diplomat Cornel Feruta has had to strike a delicate balance. On the one hand, as acting DG he can prove his suitability for the role just by carrying out his job, and he has a platform for making speeches on any number of issues important to the 35 states represented on the agency’s Board of Governors who will decide the election. But Feruta can’t risk overstepping the mark by overtly campaigning - of the four nominees for DG, he was the only one to decline Energy Intelligence’s request for an on-the-record interview - and as the effective incum- bent he faces hurdles appealing to countries seeking major changes at the Vienna agency.
