China General Nuclear (CGN) is once again the center of specu- lation over Beijing’s plans for a major overhaul of the nuclear industry that could see its nuclear assets swallowed up by its chief rival China National Nuclear Corp. (CNNC). This is among many scenarios outlined by industry sources as they contemplate CGN’s fate, but it has traction because it would create a nuclear powerhouse much bigger than CNNC on its own — and it could create the world’s largest renewables producer if CGN’s renew- able business ends up under State Power Investment Corp. (SPIC), already China’s leading renewables generator.
