CORPORATE Romania’s SNN Plots a Self-Financed Course

Romania’s Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica (SNN) is now preparing to finance the long-planned completion of one of two reactors, first started in the 1980s, through its own bal- ance sheet, after investment talks with one of China’s major nuclear firms fell through earlier this year. But the nuclear operator already faces an expensive refurbishment of the older of its two operating reactors, and is also bidding to purchase a key facility from Romania’s collapsed uranium producer, which like SNN is state-owned. Successfully financing these tasks, let alone the completion of Cernavoda-3, will require major state support.
