Rapid analysis of fipronil and fipronil sulfone in eggs using LC-MS and GC-MS

The recent 'fipronil in eggs' food scare in Europe has taken everyone by surprise. Laboratories are working 24/7 to analyse the huge numbers of samples and toxicologists are working overtime to get to grips with the scale of the contamination and theeffect on public health.RECENTLY, the European Commission revised the maximum residue level for fipronil (the sum of fipronil and fipronil sulfone expresses as fipronil) and set it at 0.005 mg/kg in eggs. This is a challenging quantification level and requires robust sample preparation and sensitive and selective analytical instrumentation.
