Bowpicker builder still turning them out; length improves 45-year-old design

Jeff Johnson at Peregrine Boats in Chugiak, Alaska, has builta lot of bowpickers over the past 30 or so years, 150 by his latest count. In the early 1990s it was as much as 20 bowpickers a winter. These days, the winter building pace has slowed to two or three boats, like the pair of 35' 6" x 13' aluminum bowpickers that were being finished off in April for Cordova, Alaska, fishermen.Johnson designed the boats as identical combination gillnett-ers and longliners. Access doors are on each side of the boat for bringing aboard the groundline and the halibut. When setting out for halibut, a longline drum will replace the gillnet drum. The longline goes from the drum to a davit and down the port side of the boat and off the stern. It's hauled back on the starboard side.
