Buffalo Boats hulls have a new builder; delayed crab season affects boatyards

Maritime Fabrications in La Conner, Wash., was building two crabbers for Puget Sound fishermen in mid-March. A 34-footer is for a crabber in La Conner, and a 32-footer is going to a crabber in Marysville. Both came out of a mold from the old Buffalo Boats shop in Bellingham, Wash., that Maritime Fabrications acquired this past fall.for the two crabbers will be of composite construction, using Plascor, a plastic honeycomb material. One of the boats will have a floodable hold beneath the deck, though that's primarily for storingthe start of the season and get, "the cream of the crop," says Giddings Boatworks owner Ray Cox. Then they are back in getting their boats ready for shrimping. However, with the season delayed, they couldn't be working on their boats because the openingmight be declared at any time. That meant a month and a half of idle time at Giddings.
