'Gas Opec’Chief Urges Industry to Promote Gas as Destination Fuel

The gas industry must continue to invest in technologies to further reduce emissions and work hard to prove that gas can be a destination and not merely a transition fuel, according to Gas Exporting Countries Forum(GECF)Secretary-General Yury Sentyurin.”It is in the best interest of the gas industry to take the mandates of society seriously,”Sentyurin said in an interview with Energy Intelligence.”We have a unique opportunity to demonstrate to the world that gas resources have an important role to play in the energy transition...We can do this while simultaneously contributing to economic growth and human well being.”This is especially important in the US, where LNG exports are in their early stages but a host of companies are looking to build large-scale LNG export facilities to supply existing and emerging markets(NGW Jul.8'19).The US is not a member of the GECF.Indeed, promoting gas as a”fuel of choice”is a key agenda item for the GECF, an international government organization that unites 12 gas exporting countries, including the largest LNG exporter Qatar and the largest pipeline gas exporter Russia, where Sentyurin serves as an energy official.Other members are Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Libya, Nigeria, Trinidad and Tobago, the United Arab Emirates and Venezuela.Seven countries-Angola, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Norway, Oman and Peru-are observers.Despite being often dubbed the”gas Opec,”the group doesn't regulate production volumes to balance the prices.But it is taking what steps it can to confront the growing challenge of keeping gas competitive over the long term as renewable energy costs catch up rapidly.
