With producers in North Dakota's Bakken Shale about to get much-needed help in moving stranded gas to market-thereby reducing the need to flare it-another major challenge has emerged: too much hydrogen sulfide(H2S)in the gas stream.With a global H2S market flooded with sour-gas volumes from the Middle East,gas processors in the remote Bakken region have been losing money all year long on the H2S they extract,according to North Dakota state officials(NGW Iun.24'19).As a result,many midstream companies have stopped accepting sour gas into their gathering lines and have even begun abandoning those systems entirely,says Department of Mineral Resources(DMR)Director Lynn Helms."Companies with wells that produce H2S will either have to pay more to process it or will have to temporarily abandon those wells until the market corrects itself,"Helms said at a press briefing late last month.
