Editor's Note:This is the first in a three-part series on the industry's challenges in curbing gas flaring in the Permian Basin.A Texas regulator's gas flaring analysis falls far short of estimates made by independent researchers and may achieve little in advancing mitigation efforts-even as the industry itself grows more worried about the blowback.Texas Railroad Commission(RRC)member Ryan Sitton last week unveiled his highly anticipated compilation of data purporting to show how much gas is flared in his state, which lies in heart of the supply-glutted Permian Basin. His findings are based on volumes reported by the producers themselves-a sticking point as there is little to no monitoring of flared volumes in Texas, nor is there prosecution of those who burn off gas without permission.
