26 Producers Embark on Voluntary Effort to Reduce Methane Emissions

More than two dozen onshore US producers last week pledged to voluntarily cut their methane emissions even as the federal government appears unlikely to impose more stringent rules to curb fugitive air pollution from oil and gas facilities. Following a similar move by Exxon Mobil in September, the American Petroleum Institute (API) and 26 companies unveiled a program dubbed the Environmental Partnership to start its methane-reduction efforts. That initial push will focus on three main areas: identifying and fixing leaky equipment; upgrading pneumatic devices to ones that release less methane; and changing the procedure for clearing liquids that build up in gas wells.
