E&P companies are softening the blow of service cost inflation by embracing a thrift few would have recognized before commodity prices crashed. Instead of outsourcing their rigs, proppants and water, many independents have taken to supplying their own. Devon Energy made that kind of efficiency a priority and in the second quarter managed to slash $100 million from its 2017 budget.
