Pa. Approves Injection Well

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has approved a permit by Penneco Environmental Solutions to operate an underground injection well in Allegheny County near Pittsburgh for gas and oil drilling-produced wastewater. Approval was needed from both the DEP and the US Environmental Protection Agency, which gave its OK on Mar. 7, 2018. The state permit allowed the company to convert a gas well from production to injection. DEP approval also sets special conditions for monitoring and reporting, including seismic events to ensure early detection of even minor ones. Penneco must also convert a nearby well into a monitoring well.
