ILEX DIMORPHOPHYLLA Aquifoliaceae

The holly, Ilex dimorphophylla Koidz., an endangered endemic from the Ryukyu Islands, is illustrated and described. The habit of leaf dimorphy, between spiny and spineless leaves, is discussed.Ilex L. is the only genus of Aquifoliaceae (holly family) comprising about 400 species of dioecious trees and shrubs widely distributed in temperate and tropical regions especially in America, and eastern and southeastern Asia. In Europe only three species are found, two in Africa, and one in Australia (Mabberley, 2008).
